It’s a new month, so time for a new Wowmanac! Stay for the end; it’s a doozy!

One of the sites I look to for the Womanac is Jeffrey Totey’s Writer of Pop Culture website. During the pandemic Totey generated fun pop culture stories and facts for every day in the calendar. It’s a great resource, and I used it a ton for ideas this month.


August 1

In 1981 on this day, MTV officially went live. (I know, it seems a few years early to me, too.) This was its very first video.

Clearly capturing MTV’s aspirations, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles was then followed by songs from Pat Benatar, Rod Stewart, and the Who. My favorite is Stewart’s “She Won’t Dance Without Me”, which amounts to Stewart and a bunch of guys who may or may not be his band (he seems so bemused by them at times) performing in a black room filled with white polka dots.
