Pop Culture Spirit Whoops
In the newsletter this week I said that Valiant Editor Tom Brennan edited “Faith”, a wonderful comic book about a plus-sized super hero that had recently won an Eisner Award.

In point of fact, while Tom does edit “Faith”, which is indeed a comic book about a plus-sized super hero that has gotten a lot of praise from fans and critics because it is indeed wonderful, in point of fact it has not been nominated for an Eisner quite yet. Actually, it’s not even eligible to have been nominated quite yet.
(I really got out ahead of this one.)
What I meant to write was that another book that Tom edits, “Ninjak”, about a ninja spy* (heck yeah it is), was recently nominated for a Harvey Award. Named after legendary cartoonist and writer Harvey Kurtzman, the Harveys are sort of like the SAG Awards; the voting body is one’s peers in the comic book industry--fellow writers, artists, editors. Which makes the whole thing pretty cool.

* Bizarre coincidence: My training to be a Jesuit priest involved three years as a ninja spy. Nonviolent, of course. They called me “Silent but Friendly.”
“Ninjak” has been nominated for Excellence in Presentation – things like the layout, the art, the design – which to me means the artists, writer and editor all working really well together to tell a visually arresting story. Which, when you think about it, is a pretty awesome thing for your peers to think you're good at doing.
Sorry for the mistake, Tom! Good luck with the Awards!
(By the way, did the nomination in any way involve this cover? Because, cat ninja? BAD. ASS.

Dare I call this... Casplay?*
*Hate the play, not the playah.)
See you next week.
