POP CULTURE SPIRIT WOW
This is the greatest takedown of TikTok My Life as a Young Professional videos.
And, ICYMI the genre, here is one of those TikToks, which are referred to on Twitter as “Adult Daycare.” You’ll have to click on it to see it.
(As always, h/t to Ryan Broderick’s Garbage Day newsletter for highlighting all of this.)
Can I just ask, are people under 30 not required to work at work? Is that a thing? Was I born three decades years too late?
Except would this life even make sense to me? Like, how does one even keep up? It basically looks like brunch extended over an entire day, with occasional pauses to post sticky arrows on your window?
Speaking of which, how in God’s name can she read anything on any of those with the brightness of the city behind you? Also, what does any of it mean? There are arrows pointing to nothing, others pointing to other arrows. There’s one in at the mid right side of the screen that is neither coming from nor going to nothing? What is she doing? Who is paying this person?
On the other hand, if this is what work is when you’re 25 in 2022, imagine what work will look like in 2050. Seriously, I can’t even imagine. But I’m also sort of fascinated.
Last week I gave a talk at St. Cecilia Parish in Boston. There were a couple topics they wanted me to discuss, but the main one was Why Don’t Gay Priests Come Out.
It’s interesting, I’ve written about that topic some already, and I don’t know that I realized I would have much more to say. But I really did. And I had this strange experience where the more I said out loud, the more I found sort of revealed within me. It was a very “Harry Potter says the magic word in front of the bare wall and the Room of Requirement appears” kind of moment.
And I think the main takeaway I had was a greater appreciation for the way that our closeting can end up turning us against each other. The way that without even knowing it we’re actually living in cages, and how important it is for us to push our way out to places where we can connect with the broader queer community, how much we need that.
I think it went okay? It might have gotten a little self-indulgent at the end, but in general it was thrilling to lay some of the issues out. I can only hope that saying some of that stuff will have a positive effect for other queer priests.
If you’re interested, here’s the talk.
I don’t know who that smug pudgy faced kid is, but I’m told at some point he was me.
INDIANA JONES AND !%!# NAZIS
So the first trailer for Indiana Jones 5 dropped. Here it is:
There are definitely moments where I’m wondering what Fleabag is doing in an Indiana Jones movie/hoping she will suddenly do this:
And it’s very much a “Remember How It Feels” video? Remember the good times you and Indy had back in the day? (Never mind Indy 4 and Son of Indy. The other times.)
But I have to say, what really hit me hard was how ready I am to see a new film that involves beating the stuffing out of Nazis. It seems like everywhere I look these days I’m hearing stories of growing fear among Jewish people (and also queer people). 2021 was the highest year on record for reports of harassment, vandalism and violence toward Jewish people. The highest year ON RECORD.
Last month I went to see Parade, a musical about the true story of a Jewish accountant who was accused of murdering a girl in his office, and how everyone in this office and town turned against him. Even after it became clear that he had nothing to do with the murder, the town dragged him out and murdered him. It’s actually a musical that didn’t do all that great when it came out, but the applause in its revival was THUNDEROUS.
I went to my old haunt Marie’s Crisis the week after the attack at Club Q in Colorado Springs. Within a few days one of the doorpersons was attacked by a drunk guy who didn’t want to leave. A few days later the word in the bar was that there was a guy at the 14th Street Station randomly stabbing people. The bar kept its door lock to protect its patrons. The New York Times reported yesterday about druggings, murders and attacks on queer people in the city.
There is a lot of terrible stuff going on out there, much of it unreported (and it seems like that’s even more true for Jewish people). I look forward to any movie that holds up the white supremacists out there trying to scare or hurt people and slaps them down.
THIS IS YOUR WEEKLY REMINDER THAT THE LAST OF US IS GOING TO BE WORTH CHECKING OUT
The Last of Us is a super popular video game series in which much of the world has been taken over by plant zombies people and humans live a semi-savage every person for themselves plus fascism life in cities. Joel is a guy living in one of those cities, transporting stuff, who gets asked to transport a little girl, Ellie, who is the only known person to get bit by the plant zombie people and not turn.
I realize it might sound like a green version of The Walking Dead but it is a lot tighter than TWD. It’s about a surrogate father/daughter trying to survive a trip across the United States. It has a tremendous story, and this looks pretty darn close to it.
THREE TWEETS
Meanwhile on HuffPo…
I’m feeling like there’s a neighbor somewhere saying “This took a turn.”
I refuse to believe that cat did that on their own, because cats do not do teams.
So agree:

I BET IT’S GOOD THOUGH
This has David Lynch in the title so it must be good.
Meanwhile I also had to offer this profile of James Cameron, because it will almost certainly be a takedown, and while I want to be a good person I am honestly very here for that.

NEW VIBE: MANTIS + DRAX
If you haven’t seen the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special yet, it’s filled with fantastic content. Most of it focused on Mantis and Drax going to Earth to kidnap Kevin Bacon to give to Peter for Christmas.
The interplay between Drax and Mantis is just nonstop wonderful. For instance, check out the first minute of this…
There’s also two instant classic Christmas songs. Check it out.
(And speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy:
Boy, I cannot wait to see what James Gunn is going to do with the DC Universe.
Have a great week!
